Sustainable habitat

Sustainability is a word until you visit a house that does it.

Building, water, energy and settlement, studied where the answers were worked out over centuries rather than last quarter.

Sustainable habitat tours for schools

India solved the problem of living in heat, in flood and at altitude long before anyone drew a rating certificate. A stepwell, a courtyard house, a root bridge and a modern green building in one week give students a comparison they cannot get any other way.

These tours pair the vernacular with the contemporary on purpose. Students who have stood in a house that stays cool without electricity ask much better questions of a building that needs a plant room to do the same thing.

What we handle
  • Old and new, side by side A vernacular settlement and a rated modern building, compared on the same criteria by the students themselves.
  • A written safety protocol, published in full and applied without exception.
  • Headcount discipline at every transition, recorded rather than remembered.
  • A costed plan showing the logistics, before the school commits.
  • One coordinator, reachable at any hour, travelling with the group.

What students come back with

Not photographs. Method.

Four things this programme is designed to leave behind. If it cannot deliver them, it is the wrong programme and we say so.

01Old and new, side by sideA vernacular settlement and a rated modern building, compared on the same criteria by the students themselves.
02The systems behind the wallWater harvesting, passive cooling, waste, materials and where they came from.
03MeasurementTemperature, light and humidity readings taken by the group, so the comparison is evidence rather than opinion.
04A design responseThe trip ends with the group proposing something, which is where the learning actually lands.
Students gathered around a solar panel on a community installation.
Growers working a terraced vegetable plot under hill cloud.
Coffee under shade trees in the Coorg hills.
The shape of it

How the days are built.

A shape, not a schedule. Yours is built around your dates, your year group and what the trip has to achieve.

Day 1The vernacularA settlement that solved the climate problem without machinery, walked slowly with someone who knows it
Day 2The systemsWater, waste and energy traced from source to end, with readings taken along the way
Day 3The contemporaryA modern building making the same claims, examined with the same questions
Last sessionRespondThe group designs, presents and defends. Comparison becomes judgement

Length, region and season are set against your academic calendar and your budget. No prices are published because a school group is costed against its own headcount, dates and inclusions, never against a brochure rate.

Before anything else

A school buys supervision before it buys a destination.

Every programme on this site runs to the same written protocol. It is published in full, because a teacher who is personally accountable should not have to take it on trust.

  • A named supervision ratio for this activity and this year group, in the proposal.
  • Headcounts at every transition, recorded against a written list.
  • Certified instructors and their own equipment, or the activity is removed.
  • An evacuation route and named facility written for every night.
Plan this programme

Tell us the year group. We will call you back.

Two minutes to send, and a coordinator calls the school back. No prices are quoted until we know the headcount, the dates and what the trip has to achieve.

Also on WhatsApp.

  • A costed plan, not a brochure
  • Your dates and your year group
  • One coordinator throughout
  • The safety protocol in writing
